Nobody should be exposed to toxic chemicals, but for tiny babies and young children making sure that the products you use are kind to their bodies is particularly crucial.

Because of their size babies and young children absorb a higher volume of toxins relative to their weight than adults do, and these can have a greater impact on organs that are still developing. Their immature systems are less able to defend against chemical damage and although there may not be immediately obvious effects, small amounts of damage in childhood can lead to critical illness later in life.

Tips on Reducing Your Child’s Exposure

There are many things you can do to limit the exposure of children to toxic chemicals in personal care products, and here are a few tips to get you started.

Check the ingredients on the products you buy and make sure they are certified as organic. Babies and young children have very delicate skin and the balance of their skin’s oils need to be maintained using natural products rather than harsh chemicals.

Avoid putting sunscreen on babies under 6 months, just keep them out of the sun instead. For older children use plenty of SPF 30 with zinc or titanium as active ingredients and avoid sunscreen with retinyl palmitate, oxybenzone, or insect repellent.

When you’re cleaning your child’s teeth use fluorine-free toothpaste, and only use very small amounts. Encourage your child to spit out the toothpaste if possible rather than swallowing it, and make sure they rinse out their mouths afterwards.

Baby wipes are handy for quick and easy cleaning, but they can contain very harmful chemicals such bronopol which may be written as 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol. Look for certified organic baby wipes or use cotton pads and water instead. Barrier creams can also contain harmful chemicals such as boric acid so make sure you check the ingredients list.

Many people recommend avoiding using baby powder because airborne particles can be inhaled, potentially damaging small lungs. Some baby powders are safer than others, however, so if you do want to use one make sure it is talc free baby powder and only use small amounts.
